Lawrence Township, New Jersey – At least one student from Rider University died in a crash that happened overnight near the college campus. The victim was 22-year-old Eliseo Diaz who resided in Union City, N.J. but is a well-loved member of the Rider community. The campus was greatly devastated by his death.
On the spot where the young student lost his life were ambulances, flashing lights, wrecked car and police.
According to the investigators, at about 2:00 o’clock in the morning, Diaz was traveling at top speed south along Route 206 when his car collided with a bus that was going out south parking lot of the Rider University after dropping off a group of students. The operator of the bus was not injured
Investigator learned that the fatality was driving with his headlights off. The fatality was in his senior year and scheduled to graduate later this month.
Erin Drexler, a fellow student, said he was shocked to discover that the victim was his schoolmate and was almost done with his studies. It was a terrible thing when Diaz would have graduated in around two weeks. He knew lots their friends would be upset as some of them, including his sister were going to be graduating with him,
Investigation is ongoing as prosecutors would like to know the factor that caused the crash; although they are suspecting that alcohol played a role in the tragedy.
The university extends their sincerest condolences to Diaz’ family and friends. They pledge to continue provide their support to his family, including their campus community. Diaz was also an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Members of the Phi Sigma sorority said that Diaz’s death has the Greek community hurting. And if one Greek goes down, they all come together and support each other. Counseling is provided by the community for those emotionally affected by the tragedy.
The community and his friends are sponsoring a candlelight vigil for Diaz tonight at 8:30 o’clock in the campus.
Rider University confirmed that one of their students was killed early Saturday morning in a crash and the fatality has been identified as senior, 22-year-old Eliseo Diaz.
The wreck occurred at about 2:00 o’clock in the morning along Route 206 in Lawrence Twp. N.J.
Based on official report, the bus was just leaving the school after it dropped off some students when it collided with a small vehicle at the exit.
Diaz who was driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
The school bus belonged to a company called First Student. Fortunately, the driver was not injured.
Until this date, there was no information regarding the cause of the crash or if there would be charges filed.
Students are provided University counselors for those who need their services.
The entire University community requested all to keep Diaz’ family in their prayers as the family requested for privacy during this difficult time.
