The fatality was identified as Eliseo Diaz, age 22 and a resident of Union City, New Jersey but had made many friendships at Rider that his passing left those on campus devastated.
The deadly spot where the young Diaz lost his life was marked by flashing lights; several policemen and a mangled remnant of a car.
According to investigators, the victim he was going south along Route 206 running at top speed when he hit with a bus that was exiting the south parking lot of Rider University. It happened at around 2:00 o’clock in the morning after he dropped off a group of students. Diaz was driving without turning on his headlights.
The school bus was from a company called First Student. Fortunately, the bus driver was not hurt.
Diaz was a senior and was scheduled to graduate later this month.
Student Erin Drexler said he was completely shock when he learned of the tragedy because the victim would have graduated within two weeks with his sister.
Prosecutors said that they are trying to discover the factor of the accident – if alcohol played a role in the crash. They will learn after the result of the BAC will come out.
The university issued a statement extending their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
Diaz was an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and his death left the Greek community hurting.
A candlelight vigil for Diaz will be held on campus tonight at 8:30 by the students. Meanwhile, the University is providing counselors for students who need their services.
Rider University confirmed that their student, 22-year-old Eliseo Diaz was killed early Saturday in a crash that happened around 2:00 o’clock in the morning along Route 206 in Lawrence Twp., New Jersey. Diaz was inside the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to officials, the bus was leaving the school after dropping off some students when it collided with a small vehicle.
There is no word on what caused the crash as investigation continued. So far, no charges have been filed at this point.
