A multi-vehicle collision, also known as a pile-up, is a traffic road accident involving many vehicles. It often happens on high capacity and high speed routes like freeways and is considered one of the most disastrous forms of traffic accidents. It could involve many cars and in one instance even more than a hundred vehicles. In a high traffic road where vehicles are likely to over speed; if one car develops a problem and suddenly halts, those behind it cannot stop in time and may hit it.
In highways, there will always be lots of vehicles speeding; more cars have to brake and skid and even to dart into other lanes and even come in front of oncoming traffic. This is the reason why more vehicles become involved in a crash and create a chain reaction effect. Investigators find it difficult to determine the cause of such accidents for it is often impossible to tell if negligence caused the crash or who started the chain reaction.
