According to police, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Kevin Demert Jr., 21, resident of Farnham. He was crossing the center line of the roadway and struck a second vehicle operated by Ashley Derenda, 18, of Orchard Park.

The conditions of Derenda and Bantin-Barney are listed in critical condition. Demert Jr. is listed in fair condition at ECMC.

Town of Hamburg Police Captain Kevin Trask said that the accident is still under investigation. According to police, speed and an unsafe lane change by the Demert vehicle appear to be contributing factors in the accident.  Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, but at this point, it appears that impairment is not a contributing factor, police said.
