At least three people were injured at a two car accident which happened in the town of Hamburg. Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a two car accident which took place about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 11, on Southwestern Boulevard near Lake View Road.
According to police, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Kevin Demert Jr., 21, resident of Farnham. He was crossing the center line of the roadway and struck a second vehicle operated by Ashley Derenda, 18, of Orchard Park.
A passenger in the Derenda vehicle, Caleb Bantin-Barney, 19, was also injured in the crash.
Demert, Jr. and Derenda, drivers of both vehicles, were transported to the Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight. The passenger, Bantin-Barney was transported by Rural Metro Ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center.
The conditions of Derenda and Bantin-Barney are listed in critical condition. Demert Jr. is listed in fair condition at ECMC.
Town of Hamburg Police Captain Kevin Trask said that the accident is still under investigation. According to police, speed and an unsafe lane change by the Demert vehicle appear to be contributing factors in the accident. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, but at this point, it appears that impairment is not a contributing factor, police said.
